Zuma letter to NPA head reveals mounting pressure from civil society

Calls from civil society organisations for President Jacob Zuma to suspend NPA head, Shaun Abrahams, could be behind the letter that could determine the NDPP's future.

In recent developments, Zuma wrote to Abrahams asking him for reasons why he should not be suspended.

Civil rights organisations went to the High Court in Pretoria and brought an application to have Shaun Abrahams suspended pending an inquiry into his fitness to hold office.

However, a heated exchange of letters between Abrahams and Hawks boss, Berning Ntlemeza, have shed light on what's been happening behind closed doors over the decision to drop charges against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

702's John Robbie spoke to EWN reporter, Mandy Weiner, about the details surrounding the matter.

She believes that pressure from Freedom Under Law and Helen Suzman Foundation have culminated in Zuma writing the letter to Abrahams.

There's a prevailing narrative out there that Shaun Abrahams was influenced in some way, that he was doing the bidding of political powers to prosecute Pravin Gordhan.
