Is there pressure on President to act quickly on NPA boss?

President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday asked the National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams in a letter to explain why he should not be suspended .

Abrahams made the announcement that Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan will be charged with fraud and then later withdrew those charges.

Freedom Under Law and the Helen Suzman Foundation have been at the forefront driving a campaign calling for Zuma to fire Abrahams.

EWN reporter Mandy Wiener says it is surprising that the President acted very quickly on this matter. She says Zuma could be acting quickly because of an application filed by Freedom Under Law and The Helen Suzman Foundation.

This could be viewed in two ways. Either he is throwing Shaun Abrahams under the bus for withdrawing charges against Pravin Gordhan, or he is simply taking action so that he can make Freedom Under Law application lose.

Fundamentally what is an issue here is the fact that the NPA head is appointed by the President rather than Parliament or JSC.
