Auditor General Kimi Makwetu has revealed that national and provincial government departments racked up more than R46 billion in irregular expenditure during the past financial year.
Makwetu was addressing the media about his report on national and provincial audit outcomes.
Irregular expenditure has increased by almost 80% compared to last year's figure and 40% since 2013/14.
EWN Parliament corespondent, Gaye Davis, says Makwetu noted the main reason for the increase in irregular expenditure was continuing non-compliance with legislation governing supply chain management in the procurement of goods and services.
