Trevor Noah on race, being 'yellow bone', Trump, the ANC and more

South African-born comedian Trevor Noah has released his debut novel about his childhood growing up in Mzantsi.

Born a Crime is an honest autobiography about Noah's upbringing, and the identity politics he faced from a young age.

It speaks of how his birth, to an interracial couple, during the apartheid regime was a criminal act.

The Daily Show host says the book has very little to do with fame, his stint in the US or his current celebrity status in the world.

His novel speaks openly about his complicated relationship with his family, particularly his parents (a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother).

It's a book about a mother and son and growing up in South Africa... I didn't want to write a story of false equivalency.

Trevor Noah

The funnyman began writing the book long before he relocated to America and says he hopes people from across the globe can relate to his story.

I only hope that people can relate to it. That's why I tried to write it in the most genuine manner. So people can share my feelings.. It was telling the truth from my perspective.

Trevor Noah

His insightful tales and comical recollections shed light on the complexities of race and the importance of dialogues about racial politics.

He says his personal stories acknowledge the light-skinned privileged which he has experienced within black communities.

I tried to tell stories that relate to me acknowledging how beneficial it is to be a lighter skinned in a system that oppresses those with darker skin.

Noah also shared concerns with President Donald Trump, the current ANC leadership in South Africa, and spoke about his writing process.

Born a Crime is published by PanMacmillan and the recommended retail price is R285 at all major book stores.
