Closet racists exist beyond those exposed on social media - analyst

17 November 2016 4:48 PM
Political analyst Maynard Manyowa says racially charged events aren't all caught on camera and don't all make it to social media.

Political analyst Maynard Manyowa says South Africans need to introspect and ask themselves where they have failed to improve race relations in the country.

Manyowa says racial tensions are continuing to divide citizens, with racially-charged incidents often creating two opposing sides.

It's become a brawl, and sadly between two extreme sides.

We're raising children in an environment where their natural disposition is to hate instead of to love. It perpetuates prejudice, discrimination and blocks the country from going forward.

This comes after two white males in Mpumalanga filmed themselves beating a black man, before forcing him into a coffin.

The video was shared widely on social media and the comment threads exposed strongly inflamed opinions on the incident.

But Monyane says closet racists cannot be accurately measured online.

He advises that these racially charged incidents aren't all caught on camera and don't all make it to social media.

In fact, he warns that citizens should question polls, reports and barometers that seem to suggest that race relations are stable in the country.

Manyowa says there are very few people who are openly racist, but there are many who secretly express hate towards other race groups.

People shy away from certain conversations because of fear about being insensitive, he says.

He encourages open and honest dialogue in the country to confront sensitive and painful issues.

Education, discourse and dialogue are the only way we can sensitize society to race relations.
