Commission proposes no pay hikes for Zuma, MPs and judges

Next year could see a zero salary hike for President Jacob Zuma, national executive, deputy ministers, members of the provincial legislature and members of Parliament (MPs), as well as judges.

The Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers recommended that senior public office bearers not receive salary increases in the next financial year, starting March 1 2017.

EWN's Barry Bateman reports that the commission announced the proposed salary adjustments in Pretoria this morning.

The commission had consulted with Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng who said judges were willing to forfeit a salary increase because of concerns about the economy.

The public officials who will receive an adjustment include municipal councillors (4% increase) and magistrates and full time members of the National House of Traditional Leaders (6% increase).

It’s now for Zuma to approve the recommendations by way of proclamation.

Bateman explains that if Zuma were to give his stamp of approval, credit ratings agencies may be encouraged by the austerity measures.

If he is to authorise these recommendations, it could be an indication of cutting spending and show a positive commitment to leadership in government.

Barry Bateman, EWN reporter

He says that the President is unlikely to deviate from the recommendations.
