Beware of dodgy scalper sites when buying tickets online

Kayla says she got ripped off by online ticketing site Viagogo while looking for tickets for the Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts.

There was a pop-up that said only 34 tickets left and they gave me a five minutes count down. I panicked, paid and ended up paying way too much for a ticket, probably four times more... and I still haven't received any tickets.

Christy Turner, co-founder and director at Webtickets, says they are in communication with Google to bring down the Viagogo website because it is the first one people see when they Google for tickets.

He says the site also mark up ticket sales by up to 300%, far above the correct retail price.

We as ticketing agency find it difficult to compete by paying that kind of click rate because we work on very tight margins.

Christy Turner, Co-Founder and Director at Webtickets

He says people need to be vigilant when buying tickets online. The first step is to go to the official event website and follow the official ticketing link to avoid being taken advantage of.
