Fake news sites on the rise

The number of fake news sites are increasing, and it seems like some people do not know how to spot a false story.

Many celebrities have been reported dead, and several untrue stories have been reported.

Mail & Guardian associate editor, Phillip de Wet, says there are legal and technological ways to solve the problem, but says South Africa does not seem to have the will to tamper with anything to do with press freedom.

Frankly, it looks to me like in South Africa we still don't have a way to do it. We are still very worried about the potential implications on free speech. I don't think we quite grasp the potential consequences yet.

The system that we have constructed accidentally allows and really incentivise these fake news. It does seem to be up to the likes of Facebook to deconstruct those incentives, to make sure that isn't a reason to do it.
