Thandiswa Mazwai pays homage to mother and SA's music icons in new album, Belede

After a seven-year hiatus, award winning musician Thandiswa Mazwai returns with a new album (Belede) offering nine jazz songs.

Naming the album after her mother, she said that her latest offering is in remembrance of her mother while paying homage to South Africa's greatest musicians such as Letta Mbulu, Hugh Masekela, Caiphus Semenya and Miriam Makeba.

My mother has always been a thread in all my work. All my work is in honour of my mother, it is in remembrance of my mother, it is an attempt to hold onto her memory and her teachings.

702's Azania Mosaka spoke to her regarding her relationship with music, the benefits of mentorship along the years and remaining true to her identity.

Speaking about the #FeesMustFall movement, she said that her recent work was also inspired by youth's determination for free and decolonised quality higher education.

There is no way that you cannot in this time be creating work that in some way relates to the student movement. It's such a powerful time, it's a such a powerful thing to be happening.

The launch of the album takes place on Thursday 25th November 2016 at Soweto Theatre with the official release date scheduled for Friday 25th November 2016
