Rare interview with Ajay Gupta lends credence to state capture claims

An interview with infamous businessman Ajay Gupta pokes holes in his version of the nature of his relationship with high-ranking public officials.

In the interview, the Gupta brother denied Minister Mosebenzi Zwane accompanying him on a trip to Switzerland to negotiate a mining deal with Glencore or knowing Minister Des Van Rooyen.

The interview was conducted at the family's Saxonwold residence by EWN senior political reporter, Stephen Grootes, soon after the 2016 State of the Nation Address in February.

Grootes signed a non-disclosure agreement with the Gupta brother and was barred from publishing the video as a result. However, the legal agreement was waived after the interview emerged on Youtube.

The Gupta family has been embroiled in allegations of state capture for years due to their close personal and business relationship with President Jacob Zuma.

The State of Capture Report by Thuli Madonsela confirmed their undue influence in multi-billion rand state contracts through cosying up various heads of state-owned entities, Ministers and Zuma.
