Return of the death penalty mooted

The South African Institute for Race Relations (SAIRR) has released a report on whether capital punishment should be reinstated.

The constitutional Court abolished capital punishment on 6 June 1995.

The institute looked into areas in society that are most challenging and places much stres on citizens, and one of those is the high crime rate in the country.

Graham McIntosh, Council Member of the SAIRR says the document will outline all the pro and cons as well as statistics around murder and death sentences.

McIntosh says people who plan to commit murder may be deterred if they know there will be a death sentence waiting for them.

He gave an example of a murder case in Port Elizabeth where a Uitenhage teacher Jayde Panayiotou was murdered allegedly by men hired by her husband.

He said people involved in muti killings and police murders can be deterred if capital punishment is reinstated.
