Ramaphosa for President - Cosatu

24 November 2016 12:44 PM

Cosatu backs Cyril Ramaphosa to be next ANC president rather than Dlamini-Zuma, and wants Mineral Resources Minister Zwane to go.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) came out of its three-day central executive meeting with an announcement that it will be backing Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to be the next ANC president.

EWN reporter Clement Manyathela says the trade union federation described the three-day meeting as robust and intense but at the end of it they have decided that Ramaphosa will be the right person to take the country forward.

Manyathela says the Cosatu stated they want someone who will have the interest of the workers at heart and Ramaphosa is better suited than Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

The call to back Ramaphosa comes despite the federation criticising him in the aftermath of the Marikana massacre.

They also said they will go out and lobby other ANC structures to support Cyril Ramaphosa. They say they need someone who is really going to be friendly with the workers.

They want someone who is going to be committed to the alliance and who will be able to root out corruption. they also mentioned that they want someone who will make this a decade of the workers and the poor.

Cosatu harshly criticised Minister of Mineral Resources Mosebenzi Zwane saying he is a weak and polarising force in the mining industry and want him out of office.

The federation also called for the investigation into state capture to be extended.
