Medical marijuana study a first for SA

The Health Department of Health is planning to release medical marijuana guidelines by the end of the year.

The Medical Research Council is planning a workshop in the coming week to talk about the possibilities of medical marijuana being available in South Africa. The council wants to conduct a study on the use of dagga for medical purposes such as pain relief as is being done in other countries.

Myrtle Clarke from Dagga Advocates says this is a positive step for South Africans.

She says extensive research has been done on the use of cannabis for medical purposes and now a study will be conducted in South Africa for the first time.

Clarke says the study could be a first step leading to government legalising the use of marijuana in South Africa.
