No word from Sars on Makwakwa suspension

The South African Revenue Service (Sars) has yet to officially confirm that second-in-charge Jonas Makwakwa has been suspended pending an investigation into allegations of unusual deposits made into his personal bank account.

EWN's Gaye Davis says the revenue service's credibility lies in the balance as the National Treasury claims not to have been formally notified about Makwakwa's suspension.

We're still waiting for official confirmation from Sars that this action has been taken against Makwakwa.

Davis reports that Sars boss Tom Moyane informed staff in an internal memorandum that Makwakwa had, on Thursday, been put on suspension.

It's alleged that a banking regulator flagged a number of cash deposits made into Makwakwa and his girlfriend's accounts since 2010.

These come from different streams, cash deposits, transfers, some foreign exchange.

According to reports, Moyane allegedly received this information in May, but only took action after scrutiny from the media and questions in Parliament.

There's now a question over Moyane and whether he acted correctly in this matter of suspected wrong doing.
