Lifman's R4 million tax bill reveals apparent Sars fallout

News24 has revealed that SARS officials are at war over an alleged "review" of Mark Lifman’s tax bill, as part of Tom Moyane’s newly set up investigative unit that is supposedly looking into the involvement of SARS employees in criminal activities.

Lifman is a wealthy Cape businessman. In 2015 after an inquiry into his assets and businesses under Project All Out, he was served with a R388 million tax bill by SARS.

CapeTalk's kieno Kammies spoke to Adriaan Basson, News24 editor, who broke the story on Thursday.

Now Moyane has assembled this unit and as part of the unit's work they've agreed to re-audit Mark Lifman. This has led to a complete fall out in Sars because the Western Cape Sars officials who have been investigating Lifman for many years did not know about this.

Adriaan Basson, News24 editor

It is currently unclear how Lifman is linked to the tobacco industry and the so called rogue unit and why on earth some Sars officials would be promising him a re-audit when the case is due to appear in court on Monday to argue why his company should be liquidated.
