What to look out for #BlackFriday online scams

South Africans have been urged to be wary of various tactics used by cyber attackers looking to scam them through Black Friday sales.

Various retailers across the country have slashed prices by up to 50% for a one day only special that is certain to cause a frenzy at stores.

702's Stephen Grootes spoke to customer experience manager at Mimecast South Africa, Heino Gevers, for advice that will come in handy for Black Friday fanatics.

There will be more targeted approaches towards exploiting Black Friday and all the specials and promotions it brings about.

Consumers have been urged to be careful while shopping by being vigilant of the following:

  • receiving a URL in an email which looks like it to comes from a retailer. The link will direct users to another site
  • encryption ransom where personal details are encrypted once a user downloads content
  • to rather use loyalty or shopping points and virtual money instead of a cash payment

You need to verify that the webiste. The easiest way to do that is to look at the site at the URL at the top that says something to the likes of https before the particular URL of whichever pay mechanism you're using.
