SA government send heart-felt condolence to Cuba

Cuba's former president and leader of the Communist revolution, Fidel Castro, has died aged 90. His death was announced on Cuban state media by his brother and Cuban President Raul Castro.

Fidel Castro ruled Cuba as a one-party state for almost 50 years before his brother Raul took over in 2008.

Castro was imprisoned at the hands of dictator Fulgencio Batista, exiled in Mexico and had a disastrous start to his rebellion before he became the youngest leader in Latin America at age of 32.

Those who supported him say Castro had given Cuba back to its people and others accused him of suppressing the opposition.

For decades, he served as an inspiration and source of support to revolutionaries from Latin America to Africa.

Spokesperson for department of international relations, Clayson Monyela, says the news of Castro's death is devastating, knowing that we have lost the greatest revolutionary that ever lived.

He says the people of South Africa are indebted to the people of Cuba for the solidarity and support during the days of struggle against apartheid.

President Zuma on behalf of the government and the people of South Africa sent the message of heart-felt condolences to the government and people of Cuba following this very sad passing of President Fidel Castro.
