LISTEN: Daredevil motorist drives off Chapman’s Peak to escape authorities

A man is now receiving medical treatment in hospital after plunging off of Chapman’s Peak Drive in an alleged effort to avoid a R42 toll gate fee.

Toll operators decided to call police about his non-compliance and the driver apparently sped through the toll booth without paying the fees early this morning.

When the motorist took off, his vehicle reportedly careened off the mountain slope.

Chapman's Peak Drive was closed to traffic around 5am as a rescue operation was launched on the scenic route on the Hout Bay side of the peak.

Police and several emergency units were called to the scene.

The man survived the crash and was safely rescued with the help of emergency crews and National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) divers and a helicopter.

Officials claim the driver is 32-year-old man believed to be from Johannesburg and now working in Cape Town.

According to the NSRI, the man was found to be conscious and in a stable condition but suffered head injuries and cuts and bruises.

There were no other passengers in the vehicle.

Police have opened a case and are now investigating the cause of the crash.

Shane Meyer, owner of Shane’s Towing gives his account of what happened on the scene this morning.

He says the driver is lucky to be alive. Take a listen:
