Africa says long-distance drivers from other provinces are often involved in car crashes due to lack of rest.

Some drivers land on wrong side of the road, which then results in fatal head-on collisions.

Traffic officers will randomly stop public transport motor vehicles (taxis and buses) between 8pm - 6am to check the state of driver.

In most instances, people are getting killed in these time of accidents. People tend to fall asleep behind the steering wheel, lose control of the vehicle.

In particular, traffic officials will be heavily monitoring the stretch of road known as the 'road of death' across Laingsburg, Beaufort West and Aberdeen.

Africa has urged long-distance drivers to get enough rest before embarking on their journeys.

He explains that it is important to take break after every 2 hours or 200 kilometers.

According to Africa, drivers will be liable to pay fines for all passengers under the age of 14 years without seat belts on.

The special traffic operation will be in addition to ongoing policing of other issues such as speeding, drunken driving and unroadworthy vehicles.
