Father of 14 year-old autistic boy 'bullied' at airport explains what happened

Father of a 14-year-old South African, Hamish Haddow, says staff at OR Tambo International Airport 'forced and bullied' his autistic son into signing a declaration of undesirability.

Alexander Haddow was travelling to his father in the UK when he was made to sign a declaration, which carries a ban on returning to South Africa for up to ten years.

Hamish Haddom says his son is not able to concentrate properly and sometimes his focus 'goes off' when asked questions.

He was carrying a copy of his unabridged birth certificate as required by the Department of Affairs with him when he was travelling.

Officials then took him in for questioning, and they even phoned his mother.

They didn't seem to focus on the fact that he had South African identity documents with him.

It proved that he is South African by having a South African birth certificate. I would have thought that having a South African birth certificate along with you when you travel should be enough to prove that you are South African. And shouldn't warrant a certificate like that.

It seems like he was a target. They seemed to go after him, and forced him to sign this document. He didn't know what he was signing. He was bullied into it.
