Prof Fikeni: NEC members turning against Zuma are strategically weakening him

President Jacob Zuma's power and influence is seen to be diminishing, particularly within the National Executive Committee (NEC).

This comes after it emerged that three other members of the NEC supported Minister Derek Hanekom's call for a motion of no-confidence in Zuma during an extended meeting in Pretoria. He was reportedly supported by Jackson Mthembu and Ministers Thulas Nxesi and Aaron Motsoaledi.

Without any doubt, his space and power is increasingly getting confined and he is wounded politically.

Dr Somadoda Fikeni, political analyst

In an effort to unpack the issues, 702's Stephen Grootes spoke to Professor Somadoda Fikeni from Unisa about where the governing party could be headed next.

He said that there are people within the ANC who are strategically working towards weakening Zuma and those close to him ahead of the 2017 elective conference.

ANC is quite a resilient party, it has managed contradictions. But these are becoming politically costly and are beginning to impact on the ANC's ability to deliver on its promises.
