Teacher jobs for cash saga gets an ear in Parliament

An inter-ministerial committee was set up to look into allegations of cash for jobs in the education sector.

The committee revealed phase two of its report last week and is being reviewed by the Parliamentary portfolio committee on education.

EWN Reporter, Ilze Marie Le Roux, says phase two showed a lot of cases had been concluded. Some of them had revealed no evidence to support the allegations made, and others had been passed on to provincial government for further scrutiny.

She says during the review, some of the MP's that were present came out strongly against Minister Angie Motshekga, saying she doesn't have the political will to stand against Sadtu. The teacher's union are accused of controlling the education system and being too involved in the appointment of teachers.

In Wednesday's review meeting, other unions were given time to express their thoughts about the second phase of the report.

The Education Labour Relations Council said it agrees there is something wrong with the system, but does not agree with the notion that the unions should not be involved in the appointment of teachers.
