World Aids Day: South Africa has come a long way in the fight against HIV/Aids

South Africa has come a long way in its fight against HIV/Aids, managing to reduce the high mortality rate and increased life expectancy due to the introduction of ARV's. This according to Prof Glenda Grey, President of South African Medical Research Council.

We also on the verge of eliminating mother to child transmission of HIV and that would be one of the aims going forward for the next 5 years just to try control and eradicate HIV transmission in pediatrics.

Prof Glenda Grey, President of South African Medical Research Council.

We know now that government is providing ARV's for anyone who is HIV positive you don't have to wait till you are sick and that is another kick for us in trying to combat HIV.

Prof Glenda Grey, President of South African Medical Research Council.

According to Grey, there are about a thousand new infections daily in South Africa and that is predominantly in young women and men. She believes the vaccine they are busy working on at the moment will help to win the fight against HIV.

General Secretary of TAC, Anele Yawa says the country has come a long way in ensuring more than 3.5 million people are on ARV's. But that is not enough, she says, because the system is failing a lot of people and causing them to default on medication.
