Amputee Paul Steyn completes 7 000km walk across SA on prosthetic leg

Social activist and adventure man Paul Steyn has today completed a 7 000km trek across South Africa in aid of charity.

He crossed all nine provinces on his prosthetic leg and finished his journey at Cape Town Stadium on Friday.

Steyn visited various communities during his 15 month-long journey, raising money for his initiative, the Paul Steyn Foundation.

Steyn survived an accident in 2000 and his right leg was amputated at age 13.

Since starting his foundation in 2012, he has helped provide 16 prosthetic legs for those who need or cannot afford them.

Prosthetic limbs are prohibitively costly, averaging at least of R60 000 a piece.

Steyn has bought six of them through the funds raised by his NPO during the course of his walk.

When I started this organisation, my focus was to help people to get prosthetic limbs in South Africa.

Steyn's friend Andre (also an amputee) has benefited through the foundation and testified to the power of Steyn's initiative.

De La Ray is the man behind making the customised prosthetic legs donated by the foundation.

He says producing prostheses is not cheap, with many of the components imported from overseas.

Saturday 3 December is the international Day for People with Disabilities and Steyn will hold a 5km Fun Day Walk in Sea Point at 10am.

SMS the word 'WALK' to 38021 to pledge R10 to the initiative.
