Malibu High Muslim learners served pork at matric ball

Muslim parents have expressed anger that their children attending the Malibu High School matric ball were served pork.

The consumption of pork is prohibited in Islam.

A parent of one of the learners, Ashraf Stevens, spoke to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies about the embarrassing situation that his children were subjected to at the school event.

Round about 22:30pm I received a call from my child and she was quite frantic saying they are serving gammon at the hall.

Stevens was told that it was a slip-up that gammon was served. He went to the school the following day to find out what exactly happened and he was offered an apology and a reimbursement of R250.

I find all this quite appalling...

Ashraf Stevens, Parent

He says the school did not make alternative arrangements for Muslim learners who only eat halaal food. The Muslim learners were later served McDonald's burgers which parents were not happy about because it wasn't clear if that particular McDonald was halaal.
