Commission of inquiry into KZN political killings a waste of time - researcher

KZN politicians fear for their lives and want a commission of inquiry to be constituted to look into the killings of politicians.

Lats week a Councillor in Muzi wa Bantu municipality was gunned down shortly after he addressed the public, creating fear that public representatives in the province are being targeted and killed.

Mary De Haas, independent research and violence monitor, says most killings are linked to factions within the ANC which is a hugely divided party at the moment.

One of the factions actually has a case against the other one claiming that the last local elections was irregular.

De Haas says approximately 20 killings that occurred in the build-up to the local government elections, and 14 of those were ANC members.

She strongly beleives a commission of inquiry is a bad idea and a complete waste of money.

We've had a series of commission of inquiry and we not even clear whether the reports were released. If the police can't identify the criminals what's a commission going to do?
