Road safety tips for motorists this Easter weekend

On average, in South Africa, there are 200 road deaths over the Easter weekend period. Road safety is a major concern for traffic authorities as we approach this weekend's festivities, and it should be for you too. Here are some things to consider before you hit the road this year.

Expert tips for travelling safely this Easter:

Motoring journalists, Jacob Mashokoa and Ciro De Siena discuss safe driving habits, the impact of speed and the importance of taking breaks during long distance driving trips.

5 ways to be a responsible motorist:

  • If you have the choice, it is safer to drive in the day time.
  • Take as many breaks in between your travels as possible. Give yourself enough time and avoid travelling in a rush.
  • Familiarise yourself with your vehicle, and check that it has an anti-locking breaking system (ABS).
  • Do a proper five-point inspection of your vehicle before leaving home, it is reported that doing so reduces your risk of having an accident by 15%.
  • Service your vehicle if it is due for a major service or any repairs.

What's your average stopping distance?

With the help of a former national production car racer at the International Killarney Raceway, Eyewitness News tested a vehicle, driving at 120 kilometers per hour, to see what the braking distance needed would be. You might be surprised at the answer. Watch below:

How long would it have taken for you to stop? Eyewitness News has created an interactive tool to illustrate the misperceptions motorists can have when estimating their braking distance. Take the quick test that calculates the required stopping distance at the speed you are comfortable driving at.

How distracted driving can cause collisions

A brief moment is all that it takes for you to lose control of your vehicle. To illustrate this, here is a mash-up of videos, by the American Automobile Association, showing the effects of distracted driving:
