Pick your own roses (and drink coffee) in urban rural tranquility

Picturesque Chart Farm in the heart of the Southern Suburbs near Wynberg Park in Cape Town, offering a farm-style retreat from the city.

It prides itself on being the only place in the Cape Peninsula where you can select and pick your own roses.

The farm has been in the Garlick family since 1934.

Margaret Garlick spoke to CapeTalk's Pippa Hudson about the family business.

The farm stall and coffee shop has been trading since the 1980s though the houses on the property date back much further.

Picking your own roses is a highlight of Chart Farm.

People enjoy choosing and wandering through the gardens. We have got different layers of colours, and of course the view is absolutely lovely, and you can sit on a bench under a tree.

Margaret Garlick, Chart Farm

The farm stall provides guests with buckets and secateurs to cut and carry the roses they select, but feel free to bring your own.

The gardens produce about 6000 roses in season and the roses picked cost a reasonable R5.50 per flower.

On Sundays ,the farm offers discounted special price for rose picking.

The coffee shop offers breakfasts, light lunches and homemade baked goods.

The venue also caters for parties and would be available for small late afternoon weddings.

During grape season the farm has 'pick-your-own grapes' and harvests hanepoot and seedless varieties.

The chestnut trees provide delicious chestnuts that are on sale at the farm stall from autumn. The stall also sells pickles, honey and jams.

It is cherry season currently, and the farm stall sells cherries from family farm Klondyke in Ceres.
