The Friday Stand-In 2016

ConCourt Judge is last #FridayStandIn for 2016

Albert 'Albie' Louis Sachs is an activist and former Judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

As a Constitutional Court Judge, Sachs was the chief architect of the post-apartheid Constitution.

He also participated in landmark rulings such as declaring capital punishment a violation of the right to life.

His early activism against the apartheid regime started when he was a second year LLB student at the University of Cape Town. He participated in the Defiance Campaign.

When he started practicing as a lawyer in Cape Town, he defended people charged under racial statutes and security laws under apartheid.

He says he is looking forward to engaging South Africans on issues affecting their lives.
