Coffin assault accused denied bail

Theo Jackson and Willem Oosthuizen were denied bail in the Middelburg Magistrates Court by Magistrate Jongilizwe Dumehleli.

The pair were seen in video that emerged on social media beating and forcing Rethabile Mlotshwa into a coffin while also threatening to set him alight.

EWN Reporter, Philani Phakgadi, says the magistrate denied them bail because he was concerned about their safety, arguing they men may be harmed or killed if released.

He said it is not in the interest of justice to release them and that he is not satisfied by evidence and arguments brought forth by their legal team.

Phakgadi says the courtroom was full to capacity. Rethabile's mother dissolved in tears when judgement was delivered and ANC supporters who were there celebrated and chanted.

The two accused refused to speak to the media, says Phakgadi. The two men will remain in police custody until their next court appearance on the 25 January 2016.
