20% maths pass mark only on the table for 2016

The Department of Basic Education released a statement announcing that the maths pass requirement for pupils in grades 7 to 9 would be reduced to 20%.

Elijah Mhlanga, spokesperson for Department of Basic Education, says Grade 7, 8 and 9 learners who have passed all subjects but failed maths, should be excused in a once off measure which the department has decided to implement this year.

We are not relaxing the pass requirements, we are not changing the policy. This is based on the fact that in 2014 we increased the pass requirements ... and we realised we needed to come up with special measures on a temporary basis to try and address the challenges.

Elijah Mhlanga, Spokesperson for the Department of Basic Education

Mhlanga says a learner report will indicate that they be passed to the next level and those learners will then be advised not to drop mathematics in matric..

This is just a once off measure for 2016, there wont be any other special dispensations, says Mhlanga.
