Competition Commission investigates five companies to stamp out price-fixing

Chief legal counsel of the Competition Commission, Bukhosibakhe Majenge, says they focused on food and agro processing companies when they conducted their search and seizure operations.

Majenge says this is because South Africa has high levels of inequality and concentration in the economy.

Research shows that poor consumers spend the bulk of their income on food. It's quite an important area for us, and it has implications on the issues of food security.

Majenge says the five companies being investigated have allegedly coordinated the timing and magnitude of price increases.
