New Unisa chancellor Thabo Mbeki has African renaissance vision - advisor

University of South Africa (Unisa) announced on Thursday that it has appointed former president Thabo Mbeki as its new chancellor.

Professor Somadoda Fikeni, advisor to the principal and director for special projects at UNISA says the university's strategy for 2030 is to reposition itself as an African university.

Thabo Mbeki as the champion of African renaissance resonated very well with Unisa's vision, says Fikeni.

Him being a public intellectual with the love of ideas and reflection as well as contributions he has made that in itself was one of the things that were taken on board.

We are mindful of the fact that in all the candidates we are choosing public servants, not perfect servants.
