What hosting the Rugby Sevens means in monetary terms

Cape Town played host to the global Rugby Sevens Tournament over the past weekend. According to Western Cape MEC for Economic Opportunity, Alan Winde, the event helps attract locals and tourists to the City and creates opportunities for entrepreneurs.

He said while the latest stats were still to be tallied, the City put up R2 million last year for the sporting event to pay for traffic support services.

It's R500 million worth of economic value for the City and it's a fantastic event to kick off the festive season. This figure is based on last year's numbers and analysis of where people came from... in excess of 100 000 over two days. These analytics help us work out average spend and gives us an economic value.

Alan Winde, MEC

Twenty five percent of sales goes to international visitors and for this type of event that's a huge percentage of visitors. Forty-five percent of people come from other parts of the country. If anyone gets on a plane or drives to Cape Town, books a hotel, hires a car, eats at a restaurant... this kicks off the domestic holiday season.

Winde spoke to Cape Talks Kieno Kammies about the opportunities for entrepreneurs in the textile industry during this event, listen here:
