Solving Cape Town's traffic congestion a complicated one

Dr Lisa Kane, honorary research associate at UCT’s Centre of Transport Studies did her PhD dissertation on traffic congestion in Cape Town. She speaks to Cape Talk Kieno Kammies about some of the findings.

Kane says the building of new roads its not really a way out of traffic congestion. It is a short term solution that would not solve anything in the long run, she says.

In August, the Dutch navigation equipment maker, TomTom, released its annual traffic index survey which showed that Cape Town is the most congested city in South Africa. On the list of the world’s most congested cities, Cape Town ranked 47th internationally.

It is not an easy problem to crack, it is what we call a wicked problem and has all kinds of different dimensions and the solutions are not the kind of things people will eagerly vote for.

Dr Lisa Kane, Honorary Research Associate at UCT’s Centre of Transport Studies

Kane spoke of some countries that managed to have their cities car free especially during peak hours by making sure that their public transport is reliable. She spoke of London where motorists pay extra to drive into the centre of London during peak hours.

The problem with us, it's that people don't want to pay extra to use their cars, she says.

It doesn't make sense in this day and age for people to be coming into offices 5 days a week...
