The Department held a three-day Indaba aimed at addressing and coming up with solutions for the continued poor performance in mathematics in public schools.
EWN reporter Thando Kubheka says Minister of basic Education Angie Motshekga acknowledged that there is a crisis in the teaching and learning of maths and science in the public schooling system and said it requires urgent intervention.
She likened the teaching and learning of maths and science to a patient in ICU that's been sick for a very long time but has been prescribed aspirin.— Thando Kubheka, EWN Reporter
Motshekga attributed the poor performance to the poor quality of teachers saying that teachers are not well equipped.
She said that teachers cannot articulate what they've learned at universities meaning that learners are left confused and not understanding what they've been taught.
Motshekga also touched on the language barriers within the system and the fact that learners do not have appropriate reading skills.
