Surfer tells of his encounter with great white shark

Surfer Ben Swart says he was lucky to get out of the water without unharmed after having an encounter with a white shark on Monday at Keurbooms Lagoon in Plettenberg Bay.

I was paddling when I suddenly heard this crushing noise and simultaneously I was airborne. I got hit from the bottom. Even before I landed in the water I knew it was a great white attack.

Swart says after he hit the water he tried to be still and eventually the shark just turned around and left. He got on his surf ski and made his way to shore together with his surfing friends.
