The turbulence of 2016 took off from 'Nenegate', says Thamm

The so-called Nenegate on 9 December 2015 was the start of a political slipstream which has continued this entire year, says columninst, editor and author Marianne Thamm.

Former Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene was recalled by President Jacob Zuma and subsequently replaced by Des Van Rooyen, who was then replaced by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan (all in the space of a week).

It started then in December. The pieces in the chess game changed irrevocably and that has led us to where we are right now.

Marianne Thamm, Assistant editor at the Daily Maverick

Thamm reflects on the political events of this year which have proven state capture to be more than just a catch phrase.

She says it has been a grueling year of political uncertainty, breaking news and economic strain.

Thamm wrote a book, and broke some major news stories - which cause the rand to plummet at some point.

From changing Gordhan charges, a powerful NPA boss, alleged Sars fraud, questionable Hawks heads and civil society activism, take a listen to her analysis.
