Tshwane deputy mayor justifies Msimanga's Tapei visit

Deputy mayor of Tshwane, Cilliers Brink, says there is nothing controversial about Msimanga's visit to Taipei, saying it is normal for mayor's to visit each other and cultivate economic relations.

Msimanga's visit to Taipei enraged the ANC who have since called for his passport to be confiscated because he has transgressed South African foreign policy.

We were elected to deliver change and create jobs. That is our mandate even if that mandate offends the ANC.

Cilliers Brink, Deputy mayor of Tshwane

As a pro-jobs city government, we follow reasonable leads that might help us get foreign investments.

Brink questioned both the fact that South Africa has an office in Taiwan and the Taiwanese government has a liaison office in South Africa.

Ha says when the Department of Trade and Industry sent a trade delegation to Taiwan, the ANC didn't make any noise about it.

You don't hear the ANC saying Minister Rob Davies is a traitor.

JJ Cornish, Africa Correspondent

According to EWN Africa correspondent, JJ Cornish, it was in 1998 that South Africa derecognised Taiwan and recognised China under the Nelson Mandela government.

Cornish provides a thorough explanation as to how these relations came about...
