Gauteng Liquor Board denies decision to extend liquor trading hours on Sunday

Gauteng Liquor Board chairperson, Fhedzisani Pandelani, denies making a decision to extend liquor trading hours on Sunday to accommodate the 105th birthday celebrations of the African National Congress (ANC).

Pandelani says they only clarified whether such latitude exists within the Act.

All that we did was to clarify the situation and say within the Act we could, but there are strict conditions.

Reports this morning suggested that the board has reversed its decision following complaints from people about the extension.

ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe also heavily criticised the extension of trading hours saying the celebrations are about the struggle not to promote drunkenness.
