Jammeh drives Gambian electoral commission into exile

Gambian local media reported that the chief of Gambia's Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has gone into hiding after he announced that the man who led the country for 22 years was no longer the president.

Alieu Momar Njai and other staff of the electoral commission fled the country after security forces took over the headquarters of the electoral commission.

President Yahya Jammeh initially accepted defeat to Adama Barrow, who won the elections by 45% of the vote and then later changed his mind, refusing to step down.

EWN Africa correspondent, JJ Cornish, reports that some members of the Gambian military have left the force because they don't want to fight their neighbours in Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal protecting Jammeh.
