Congolese President Joseph Kabila to step down by year end

Congolese President Joseph Kabila will step down after elections which are to be held before the end of 2017.

Under the deal between Kabila's party and the opposition, Kabila will be unable to change the constitution to extend his mandate and run for a third term as the President of the Republic of Congo (DRC).

Kabila who has been in power since 2011, should have left office on December 20 at the end of his second term, but he has shown no sign of wanting to step down.

The National Transition Council will be set up to ensure a smooth transition and end the political crisis in the country.
