Real-time app helps firefighters track and monitor fires

Researchers at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research have been working tirelessly to develop a fire detecting application in areas prone to wildfires.

Phillip Frost, from the Remote Sensing Specialist: CSIR Meraka Institute, says they've been working on the application since 2003.

The application is called AFIS (Advanced Fire Information System). It is a real-time platform that allows firefighters to track and monitor fire breakouts.

Frost says the app uses Nasa satellites to track down fires and detect these fires.
