Matric Results 2016

Matric results not misleading, just one among other measures - Basic Education

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has dismissed claims that matric results are a flawed means to measure the health of the education system.

DBE Director-General Mathanzima Mweli says the national senior certificate (NSC) is a useful yardstick, among other measuring instruments that are in place.

You measure all key points of education... We look at different key points of the system. It's one of the barometers. But it's not the only one.

Mathanzima Mweli, Director-General of the Department of Basic Education

Mweli says the matric results are promising after Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced a pass rate for the 2016 matric class of 76.2% from a previous figure of 74%.

We are encouraged by the improvement but we still have a long journey. But the system is indeed responding.

Mathanzima Mweli, Director-General of the Department of Basic Education

He responded to critique of the matric certificate's value, apparent lack of teacher expertise in the system and poor investment in early learning.
