Over 37 000 Gauteng learners achieved a bachelor pass, the highest number of the country's 9 provinces.
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says the province has a highest number of schools that performed well in the country, with 32 schools getting a 100% pass rate.
93% of the schools who have achieved the 100% pass rate are doing better than they have been doing in the past years, it's not that they have been getting 100% consistently.— Gia Nicolaides, EWN reporter
The best district is Gauteng West in the West Rand, and they achieved a 91.2% pass rate— Gia Nicolaides, EWN reporter
Overall, Lesufi believes Gauteng has had outstanding results in 2016, even though they have dropped the spot in terms of the top three positions in the country.— Gia Nicolaides, EWN reporter
Free State province has emerged as top performing province for 2016 matric results with 88.2%.
Spokesperson for Free State MEC for Education, Howard Ndaba, says the department's intervention yielded results.
Education expert and Wits Associate Professor, Elizabeth Walton, says government should invest more in strengthening early education than starting when learners are doing higher grades.
We need to work towards achieving quality education for all our children regardless of where they come from.— Professor Elizabeth Walton, Wits Associate Professor
Walton says the lower performance in the Eastern Cape is attributed to the past, as rural areas still lag behind with development.
We do need to take responsible for poor performance in rural areas, and look for urgent and radical ways to improve learners outcome there.— Professor Elizabeth Walton, Wits Associate Professor
