AfriForum's urgent court application on Eskom thrown out

Judge Hans Fabricius ruled on Thursday that Eskom is allowed to cut power supply to eight municipalities to recover billions of rands owed to it, saying municipalities must be held accountable.

The High Court in Pretoria dismissed an urgent application by civil rights group AfriForum with costs.

The group wanted the courts to stop the power utility from cutting electricity supply to municipalities saying it is unfair to residents who are actually paying their accounts.

EWN reporter Barry Bateman says AfriForum was unable to prove to the courts how this matter is affecting it as an applicant, and so the court ruled in favour of Eskom.

Bateman says the municipalities have a few days to come up with a plan to pay their debts or at least make some kind of commitment to pay.

Eskom's acting CEO Matshela Koko said he is willing to negotiate with the municipalities.

If they do not pay, they will experience structured power cuts with services being disrupted during peak times in the mornings and evenings.
