Court ruling will leave 27 fishing companies without income - Senzeni Zokwana

Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Senzeni Zokwana, says they are committed to making sure that transformation in the fishing industry occurs.

This follows an interim interdict granted in the Cape High Court by Judge Lee Bozalek on Tuesday, to temporarily suspend hake trawling.

Viking Inshore Fishing made an application about the new quotas introduced by Minister Zokwana, and came into effect at the beginning of 2017.

Zokwana says this judgement undermines the separation between the judiciary and the executives.

He says 27 companies that rely solely on hake trawling are now without work. Viking should have used the appeal process before going to court because they have been heard successfully on previous occasions.

The situation has left a number of companies in a dire state.

Companies should not feel like they are entitled to fishing rights because of the rights that were allocated in previous terms.

The interim interdict will be effective until the final ruling is made on the 6 February.
