Pharmacists must give patients full info on HIV home test kit - Pharmacy Council

Take-home HIV testing kits are now available at pharmacies across the country.

The South African Pharmacy Council (SACP) says that pharmacists are required to provide patients and care-givers with the full extent of information needed before purchase of the kits.

SACP CEO Amos Masango says pharmacists should provide details about the kit and demonstrate how they should be used.

The pharmacists have the knowledge about the aspects of the screening kits. They must be able provide information on how to conduct the test, correctly interrupt the results and access support services.

Amos Masango, Registrar and CEO of SA Pharmaceutical Council

Masango explains that the home test kit is it is not a confirmatory test, but rather a screening test.

Therefore, pharmacists need to direct patients to medical facilities that will provide confirmatory tests or counselling.
