Spokesperson for the Gender Equality Commission, Jabu Baloyi says they will investigate reports that an activist in KZN is pressing on with the controversial bursary scheme benefiting girls who are virgins.

According to reports, cultural activist and advocate for virginity testing, Nomagugu Ngobese is planning to get private funders to fund bursaries for young women who are virgins.

The Commission launched an investigation last year and ruled that the scheme was discriminatory and recommended its closure which was accepted by uThukela mayor Dudu Mazibuko who launched the scheme in 2015.

We will never as a commission deprive issues of tradition which are in line with the constitution of South Africa.
