Sanco calls for govt intervention in Eskom's municipality debt saga

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) has called on the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) to place defaulting municipalities owing Eskom under administration.

This comes after the High Court in Pretoria ruled that Eskom is within its right to cut power to consumers and municipalities who are not paying for their services.

The power utility wants to recover approximately R10.2 billion in debt from eight defaulting municipalities.

Sanco says Cogta and Treasury should intervene and take over the powers at municipalities to address the credit issues and investigate corruption or maladministration.

If there are financial wrongdoings in those municipalities, Cogta and Treasury should be able to address that question.

Jabu Mahlangu, spokesperson of the South African National Civic Organisation

Sanco spokesperson Jabu Mahlangu says placing municipalities under administration would be in an effort to protect the interests and rights of the communities and services such as hospitals and clinics who shouldn't be cut off.

Take a listen to Sanco justify this proposed move:
